Sherlock Holmes Visits A Cemetery is a good, short read but not only for those who call themselves Sherlockians. It really is a book for anyone attracted to the Victorian era; art, architecture, the theatre, American business moguls, and history; and of course, beautiful Graceland Cemetery, the final resting place of many, many interesting people. But for the devotees of the sixty original Sherlock Holmes stories authored by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (or was it Dr. John H. Watson?) this book is something special. It uniquely supplements the Holmes literature with little known Sherlockian trivia and fascinating, obscure facts about the Master Detective’s personal life (e.g., did you know Sherlock Holmes enjoyed a glass of beer now and then?); and it does so while taking you, either actually or by proxy through these pages on an edifying and entertaining walk through Graceland Cemetery. So take to the stroll ... you will be pleasantly surprised ... but, most important of all, you will have an enjoyable time. DONALD B. IZBAN, who admits to having never read the Sherlock Holmes stories (a confession believed by absolutely no one), is a member of the prestigious Baker Street Irregulars, the distinguished Praed Street Irregulars, and the ultra-exclusive Sherlockians By Invitation Only Society (an organization he founded, because if he didn’t do so, he wouldn’t have been admitted as a member). He also belongs to the following scion societies of the BSI: The Hounds of the Baskerville (sic), Hugo’s Companions, the Criterion Bar Association, and the STUD Sherlockian Society, to name just a few. So, it is safe to say that he gets around. He’s been published in several Canonical periodicals many times; he has given Sherlockian programs often to various groups of Sherlock Holmes “followers”; he has authored the authoritative Sherlock Holmes College Curriculum for The Sherlockian Times; and he has put together and put on (and he does mean “put on”) the fabulously successful three-day Canonical Convocation and Caper in Door County, Wisconsin (five times). In addition, he has masterminded such Sherlock Holmes extravaganzas as the Rache Road Rally, the Hunt for the Mongoose Named Moriarty, the Holmes Hike, and the Dartmoor Open Golf Championship; and he is planning a Morley Motorcade for the foreseeable future for the Torists International, another Sherlockian club he founded in collaboration with two of Chicago’s foremost pundits on the “Sacred Writings,” Tony Citera and Fred Levin. SHERLOCK HOLMES VISITS A CEMETERY is his first book. He expects it to become a “unique Izban,” that is to say, a rare “collectible.” And to this end he promises to write no more books (not that anyone would want him to).
