One of the most popular and enduring Sherlock Holmes plays was written by William Gillette the eminent turn-of-the-century Broadway actor. With impudent bravado he starred himself. Not many know that when Gillette took his production to London in 1905 Charles Chaplin played the part of Billy. I was thrilled when Mr. Peter Donat asked me to produce and direct a new Sherlock Holmes play he had written with a colleague. Donat and I had been actors together at The Stratford Festival in Stratford, Ontario. Mr. Donat is one of our finest actors and has scaled the heights of Shakespeare’s greatest roles at Stratford and other leading theatres in North America. He has also given dozens of memorable performances on Film and Television. Now Mr. Donat has only to don the ubiquitous deer stalker to be a stunning Holmes but, unlike Mr. Gillette, with admirable modesty declined my blandishments to star in his own work. His theatrical instincts, however, are emblazoned on the pages of this very fine work. I would like to dedicate this publication to the memory of our designer Mr. Tony Abrams. Mr. Abrams was a wonderfully gifted and respected designer who died last year at a far too early age. Just the recollection of his design, that miraculously transformed Baker Street into the Cathedral crypt, still sends a shiver up my spine. We hope the reading of this fascinating piece will fill you with shivers of delight. Finally, my thanks to that Physician in Shelburne who, while treating me for an acute case of poison ivy, discussed things poisonous which led inevitably to matters Sherlockian. Yes, you have deduced correctly, that led to the publication of this volume. —James B. Douglas The Director Also available in hardcover $36.00
