This is a landmark collection of poetry by August Derleth, Wisconsin's most famous regional writer and is his first in almost three decades. August Derleth was one of our most prolific writers. He wrote and edited more than 150 books. Although known primarily for his Sac Prairie Saga, Derleth also write many historical novels, biographies, histories of his native state of Wisconsin, and was one of the early pioneers of macabre, fantasy and science fiction. They document the often sad and tragic lives of the many Sac Prairie residents who were buried in a quiet graveyard across the road from the author's home. Unlike Edgar Lee Masters' famed Spoon River Anthology in which the dead speak of their own unhappy lives, Derleth has chosen to write the epitaphs for them, in his unique and elegant style. These poems of the Sac Prairie people were culled from newly discovered manuscripts in the late author's home in Sauk City, Wisconsin. Most are published here for the first time.
