In this volume we find three previously unreported adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the world's first consulting detective, all set between the years 1894 and 1898, as well as a short radio play that explains how John H. Watson, M.D. was brought to safety after the Battle of Maiwand in Afghanistan in 1880. Beyond the pastiches and the play will be found eight of what are dubbed “The Writings on the Writings”; articles examining particular aspects of the life and times of Holmes and Watson, and investigation of some of the previously unexplained anomalies to be found in the Canon.

PATRICK CAMPBELL, P.Eng., M.Bt., was born in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1923, and was educated in Manitoba and in England. He was apprenticed in the aircraft industry during the war, and was subsequently a disarmament officer with the Control Commission for Germany. He returned to Canada in 1952, and was employed in the aircraft industry and in marine engineering until retirement in 1993. He became a devoted Sherlockian in 1987, and has served seven years as Sovereign of the Bimetallic Question of Montreal, and has won the coveted Derrick Murdoch Memorial Award an unprecedented three times. Shades of Sherlock is his first Sherlockian volume, following a book recording the history of aircraft manufacture at Canadian Vickers and Canadair.
