PORTUGAL has had a distinguished journalistic career for 53 years: feature writer, foreign news and military editor during WW II on The Peterborough Examiner under the late Robertson Davies; copy desk editor, The Globe and Mail; 20 years as copy desk editor-in-chief, Editorial Services, Maclean-Hunter Ltd; also a long-time travel writer. From 1942 when she first wrote about young Canadians going to war; handled the long casualty lists and visited their families; and saw those who returned, she has had an enduring interest in and love for Canada’s veterans. Shortly after WW II ended, she was among the early few able to visit Normandy. Her articles on the devastation and struggle to rebuild Caen were among the first materials to form a basis to begin rebuilding their destroyed archives, and the Ancient University of Caen. For this, she was presented with the City of Caen’s Medal of Honour in March 1984. She is an Hon. Member of the 1st BN Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Highlanders Assoc., and The Sherbrooke Fusilier Regiment, Ontario Assoc., both D-Day regiments; received a Letter of Commendation from the U.S. Government for leadership during a riot attack on the U.S. Embassy and U.S.I.S. in Cambodia in 1964; and in 1994 was presented with the Commemorative Medal of the 50th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings by the Deputy-Mayor of Bayeux, “on behalf of the Norman people.” She is a member of the Royal Canadian Military Institute, Battle of Normandy Foundation, The Canadian Institute of Strategic Affairs, the Toronto Press Club.
