Although it illustrates what might have taken place on a medium sized police service in Southern Ontario, the scenario could duplicate what might happen in Toronto, Halifax, Montreal, Saskatoon or Vancouver, or for that matter in most any city in the U.S., should the circumstances be similar, only the names and locales would change.

In the early part of 1978, a police raid was conducted on an alleged criminal biker gang, known as the Henchmen MC Club. These people were believed to have connections to the North American arm of the Outlaw Motor Cycle Club, the notorious criminal biker gang.

The writer was a staff sergeant in charge of a division, called the Emergency Tactical Unit. A unit that had been specially created to handle potentially dangerous situations and to provide some sort of restraint on the criminal biker element, which appeared to be out of control.

Nearly every story has two sides and until now only one account of this story has ever been offered. We will present a version of the 'other side' which, although fictional, may be close to the actual truth!

" The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing".

Artist Bio:

Joe Lederman, a retired career police officer, served with the Waterloo Regional Police Service for nearly thirty years after being honourably released from the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Engineers.

Joe worked on the Patrol Division, as a patrol officer and supervisor on the three separate occasions, totalling nearly fifteen years. Joe headed the Youth Division for six years. While there, he was instrumental in the formation of K.W.C.O.P.S., a cadet corps that worked with hundreds of boys and girls in the area.

Joe helped formulate the Emergency Tactical Unit and served as supervisor.

Joe was demoted in 1979 after a Public Inquiry into the Tactical Unit’s handling of a criminal biker gang, the Henchmen M/C club. He and his family lived through nearly four years of hell; death threats, the threats of rape and murder of his daughters, attempts to “bomb” his home and vehicle, and constant surveillance intermittently for several years.

Joe returned to Patrol Division, remaining there until he was elected full time president of the Waterloo Regional Police Association in 1984. He retired from the association presidency and the Force in 1988. The rank of Staff Sergeant was reinstated on his retirement.

During Joe’s career he received several departmental commendations and numerous positive documentations. Joe was charged criminally with assault on two separate occasions and was found not guilty.

After retiring Joe assisted in forming both local and provincial associations for police retirees, serving as president of both groups.

A long and eventful career!
